Junk Food Facts

Junk food facts are very alarming indeed. Junk food is partly responsible for the obesity epidemic in many of the world's civilized countries. The term junk food normally refers to food that has little or no nutritional value or to food that is high in one or more of these properties: oil, fat, salt and sugars. Eating a lot of junk foods can cause eating disorders, obesity and several health related problems. It has been estimated that about one third of hearth attacks are caused by the regular consumption of junk foods. During the last few years there is a much greater awareness on the bad effects of junk foods. Still though many people are addicted to junk and cannot do without it.

Junk food lacks the essential minerals, vitamins and fatty acids that are normally obtained from balanced diets. As a result junk food can also affect the brain and functions of the brain like the ability to learn and concentrate. In fact it has been shown that children who eat a lot of junk food can have eating problems and learning difficulties. Other studies have shown that children that eat lots of junk food are less resistant to insulin than children that eat healthier food. High levels of insulin can lead to coronary hearth diseases at a later stage in life.

It is not only humans who are affected negatively by junk food. Scientific experiments have shown that cockroaches that were put on a junk food diet become fatter and mature at a later stage than cockroaches that were put on a healthier diet.

Avoiding Junk Food

Avoiding junk food is not easy for those people who are highly addicted to this type of food. What can one do in order to stop eating junk food:

1. The first thing you should do if you want to stop eating junk food is to educate yourself better on junk food. Some people say that that junk food does not really cause harm to your body. Others admit that junk food can really cause health problems, however they also tell you that we only live once and everybody has to die some time or another, so what is the point of living a healthy lifestyle. In my opinion that is some stupid and illogical reasoning! These people say these things because they want to justify themselves why they do not want to stop eating junk food. The truth is that no one (usually) wants to be fat, no one wants to have health problems, no one wants to feel tired and drained and no one wants to die young. Therefore before coming to stupid conclusions about junk food the first thing you should do is to become better educated about the ill effects of junk food and then you should start reasoning with your mind not with your tummy!

2. Avoid buying junk food in first place. If your friends go to McDonals, Burger King, KFC or Pizza Hut do not be afraid to tell them that you prefer to eat some healthier food. Try to educate them on junk food facts and the ill effects of junk food. If they insist in going to such establishments do not go with them, or if you really want to go with them eat some healthy food beforehand so you will no longer have the desire to buy food once at the establishment.

3. Be determined and have a plan. As in everything in life, you need to be determined in order to succeed in your aim and this includes the task of avoiding junk food. Little or no determination does not usually bring success and this includes your quest to overcome your junk food eating habits. If you eat junk food every day and find it difficult to stop eating junk food altogether you should make a plan. For example, for the first two weeks you will eat junk food every other day, then for the next two weeks you will eat junk food twice a week and for the next two weeks after that you will eat junk food only once a week. Cutting junk food in this way is obviously simpler than cutting junk food altogether. Following a weight loss diet such as the calorie shifting diet can also help, since this diet permits you to eat junk food for three consecutive after following a certain diet plan for eleven days.
